In the center of Little Rock is a neighborhood now known as Midtown. Convenient to almost anywhere in town, it was originally developed in the 1940's and 1950's. The area is nestled between The Heights and West Little Rock and somewhat blends with Cammack Village, Kingwood and Leawood. Here, the most common type of home is a one level ranch style on a flat lot
Residential areas surround Midtown's business centers with neighborhoods full of ranch style and modern homes with big yards. Established in the 1940's and 1950's, these areas are lush with landscaping, tree canopies and kids running around in front lawns. The neighborhoods of Midtown include Hall High, Briarwood, Leawood, Kingwood, Normandy and Cammack Village Today these homes are turning over to younger residents attracted by the convenient location, large lots and tree lined streets.
Cammack Village is Little Rock’s “city within a city.” Located between the Heights and Kingwood, this small community was incorporated in 1943 by the Cammack family. Originally, the area was developed to house officers stationed at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock during World War II. A large portion of the town was donated by the Cammack family to the University of Arkansas. Today this gated area contains the home of the president of the University of Arkansas System, as well as the System’s administrative offices. Cammack Village has its own city government, police force and fire department, but relies upon Little Rock for its water, waste collection, and power services. The city maintains two parks, and Jefferson Elementary School of the Little Rock School District is located within its borders.
