We know selling your home is an exciting time in your life. Whether upgrading to the perfect dream home or moving across the country for that dream career, it usually coincides with a milestone.

Unfortunately, it can sometimes be incredibly stressful if you are on a deadline and need to close on your home quickly. Luckily there are many tips and tricks to making this possible, and the most important is making sure that your home is parade ready.

Put yourself in your potential buyer’s shoes. How many times have you as a homebuyer walked into a space, only to be distracted by the homeowner’s personal belongings or offensive, pink painted walls? These seemingly tiny details can be easy to overlook as the homeowner, but as the buyer they can be glaring and even cause disinterest.

There are steps sellers can take to ensure that when a potential buyer walks through the door, they can imagine themselves and their family in the space. Start with these simple tips:

Declutter the space.
This means removing personal items that make the viewer feel they’ve stepped into your life. Photographs, books, artwork and anything else that exudes your personality should be removed. Also, clean out closets and storage areas as well as counter spaces and bookshelves. Remember, you’re after a minimal feel, as a little organization is usually all these areas need to generate interest.

Create a blank slate.
Painting rooms that have been covered in bright or bold colors in a more neutral tone often exude noticeable results. This simple change makes it easier for potential buyers to stay focused on the space, rather than obsess over a wall color they may not choose for themselves.

Make sure the furniture creates clean lines in each room…
…and that each room has a distinctive purpose. Be sure that the furniture is far enough removed so that there is a clear path through each room, and that each room is easy to identify, i.e., kitchen nook, living room, bedroom. If this sounds foreign to you, take some time to tour a model builder home in person or online to get some ideas.
